Mijas Pueblo is a village in the mountains of the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. One of Andalucia’s prettiest towns, it’s known for its whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies, and beautiful panoramic views overlooking the Mediterranean sea. It’s a great place to spend a day enjoying the comfortable climate and scenery, and after braving the hike of Caminito del Rey, I opted for a more relaxing day in this charming little village.
Here are some things I recommend to see and do
Take a Ride on a Donkey Taxi
Although some consider it controversial, this is one of the most popular attractions. Take a ride on a colorfully-adorned donkey or “burro” to enjoy the sights of Mijas. As far back as the 1960s, local workers used the burros for work, and when visitors saw them coming home, they often stopped them for photos or rides and would compensate them for doing so. In comparison, the tips from the tourists were more than a day’s pay, and so a new profession began.
Take a Guided Tour on a Tuk Tuk
Enjoy a guided tour on a Tuk Tuk, an electric vehicle, where you’ll get to see some of the hidden gems of Mijas. Friendly guides will drive you around the village and stop at interesting points, allow you to take photos, and provide you with interesting facts about Mijas. For booking information on Tuk Tuk and other tours in Mijas, check out Viator for details.
Visit Mayan Monkey Mijas
Stop by the world’s smallest chocolate factory located in the Virgen de la Peña Square. Indulge in some of the tastiest treats, learn how to make chocolate, or take a tour of their museum! They have a delicious selection of ice cream and sorbet as well!
Do Some Shopping
There are plenty of open markets in Mijas. Or, shop in one of the local boutiques for beautifully crafted art, clothing, or souvenirs. Keep walking through the narrow cobblestone streets, and you’ll find other little unique shops along the way.
Enjoy Delicious Tapas
With a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, and tapas bars, you’ll have plenty of traditional Spanish dishes and delectable meals to choose from while you enjoy your day in Mijas. However, don’t fill up in one place. There are plenty of things to try as you walk through the village!
Visit the virgen de la peña Hermitage
The Virgen de la Peña (Virgin of the Rock), is the patron saint of Mijas. Admission is free to visit this tiny chapel that was built on a mountainside. On a clear day, from the viewpoint beside it, you can see the African coast!
Enjoy a scenic walk through the village
Why not just take it slow, and enjoy the scenic route? Walk the hilly, narrow streets and take in the picturesque white-washed homes adorned with colorful, flower-potted walls? For something more spectacular, walk up to the higher peaks for panoramic views of the village and the Mediterranean, then let the breeze cool you off before heading back down to the main square. Whatever you choose, you’ll enjoy spending time in this charming little village!
