Embracing Fears: Hiking at Caminito Del Rey

Always Looking For A Challenge

I’ve been working on overcoming my fear of heights by challenging myself to take on any high point I can find. I’d make my way to the top and frightfully peer over the edge with my legs quivering beneath until eventually, I feel at ease. I learned about Caminito Del Rey when preparing for a trip to Málaga, Spain, on the Costa del Sol. I thought it would be the perfect hike – breathtaking views, lots of adventure, and of course, the adrenaline rush. I was nervous, excited, and couldn’t wait for the unexpected.

My tour included transportation to and from my resort. Also included was a traditional Spanish breakfast and a hearty lunch. Before arriving in Spain, I watched several Youtube videos just to see if they would put me at ease. As it turns out, they didn’t. I had anxiety the entire trip!

The World’s Most Dangerous Walkway

This walkway is lined along the walls of a narrow gorge and built for the workers of the hydroelectric power plants to cross between them. The original construction began in 1901, and over the years, the walkway deteriorated and eventually closed due to a few fatal accidents. After a rehabilitation project, the walkway re-opened in 2015 and became one of the best new attractions to the public. My extensive research ensured that this would be a safe excursion, so I took the climb 330 feet above the water. After all, I have a terrible fear of heights!

Having Second Thoughts

Getting started was a process. From one holding area to another, I waited with anticipation for this new adventure. Our guide led us through a long, dark tunnel and walked us along the gorge until we finally arrived at our starting point. There were several groups ahead of us, so it was about 30 minutes before we were able to begin.

We waited in the queue after receiving safety instructions and then headed further up the walkway. Fear and excitement rushed through me, but it was too late to turn around. I could barely hold onto my cell phone as I snapped photos of the gorge below.

Crossing The Gorge As The Water Roars Below

After a few miles, we finally reached the suspension bridge – the most challenging part of the hike. I braced myself as I watched several hikers ahead of me cross the gorge. Then when it was my moment to pass, I took a deep breath and stepped onto the bridge. I cautiously walked across while the mighty roar of water bellowed hundreds of feet below. About midway, I managed to take a video of this fantastic experience. I don’t even remember looking through the lens as the camera rolled. I quickly made it to the other side and down the stairs along the wall of the cliff. It all happened so fast. Almost too soon! Luckily, I have a video of my experience to look back on. I might have missed one of the most amazing and memorable events of my lifetime!
