Finding Small Pleasures When Social Distancing Is The New Norm

The past few weeks have been stressful for many of us since the news of the Coronavirus outbreak. Each day, as new information emerges, we try to adapt to the changes that come with the effects of this pandemic. As of late, schools are closing, and non-essential workers must stay home. There are limits to the number of people allowed at gatherings, and social distancing is the new norm. The other day I received new restrictions from my fitness center (my sanctuary!). Worst of all, I have to postpone my travel plans indefinitely! Now that’s the last straw!

In A Rut

For the past few days, I found myself sitting at home in a slump. While watching the news for most of the day, I began to see a dismal future. However, I knew I needed to pull myself out of this funk. After all, it may be a while before things change for the better. Therefore, the only thing to do is to make the best of it. Despite all the restrictions put into place, I had to find something to do to keep from going stir crazy. I needed to go on about my life – somehow, someway. So I jumped into my car and took a drive.

Small Pleasures

New York is more than just tall buildings, bright lights, and congestion. If you take a drive further north, you’ll find many parks, mountains, lakes, and scenic views. I didn’t have to drive too far before ending up at one of those places. I stopped at a nearby lake and took a walk around. There were a few others, walking their dogs, jogging, or sitting on benches, all maintaining their “social distance” as they enjoyed the weather and the view.

I enjoyed myself as well on this little staycation with the sunshine beaming down, warming my face. What a waste of time it was being cooped up in the house, brooding over the news. I could have been here all along, keeping my “social distance,” while still enjoying this small pleasure.

Stay safe, my friends.

  1. My small pleasure? I have been walking around in the neighborhood during the Coronavirus crisis, and have found that connecting with nature is so uplifting. I even saw my first Robin yesterday, and I bet you know what my wish was!
